We loved it so much the first time that we wanted to do it again -- and it actually cost about the same to buy a whole new set on Amazon as it would have cost to just get the replacement caterpillars from Insect Lore.
The box comes without the actual caterpillars, and it costs a couple dollars of shipping to get them. But they come promptly, and you can actually pick a delivery time in the future (which we did the first time, since it was winter when we got the set, but wanted to be able to release the butterflies outside.)
The caterpillars arrive in a plastic jar complete with all the food they need. They're tiny at first but grow really fast over the course of about a week or so. That alone is pretty cool to watch. Then after about a week to 10 days, they climb to the top of the jar and each make their chrysalis (as the guide book informed us, moths make cocoons; butterflies transform in chrysalis.) Once they're all tucked away, you open the jar and remove the cardboard circle they're all on and pin that to the side of the mesh butterfly garden. A few days later the butterflies emerge.
While we bought this for our kids (2, 4 and 6) my wife and I were as enthralled by it as they were. The first time a butterfly hatched, I took pictures of it with my phone and immediately texted them to my wife so she could see. It's just that cool! Another cool thing we didn't expect to see was a few days after they were hatched, we got to see a pair of butterflies mating.
I highly recommend this. It was easy to use, fun and every single one of the caterpillars made the transformation both times we did it.You'll loved it and your kids too!
